About
Professor Paolo Gardoni holds the Alfredo H. Ang Family Endowed Chair and is an Excellence Faculty Scholar in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He directs the MAE Center, which advances a multi-hazard approach to engineering, and is a co-founder of the Societal Risk and Hazard Mitigation Program.
Professor Gardoni's research focuses on risk and reliability analysis, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, and decision-making under uncertainty. His work examines how natural hazards, climate change, and deterioration affect infrastructure and communities, alongside strategies for disaster mitigation and recovery. His research also addresses the ethical and societal dimensions of risk and includes regional landslide susceptibility mapping using data-driven and physical models.
Professor Gardoni holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a Fellow of the Engineering Mechanics Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and received the 2021 ASCE Alfredo Ang Award on Risk Analysis and Management of Civil Infrastructure. His academic service includes founding Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure and serving as Editor-in-Chief of Reliability Engineering & System Safety from 2020 to 2025.
