About This Special Issue
The rapid evolution of AI technologies over the past decades has profoundly impacted diverse sectors, including the engineering domain. AI techniques have already shown particular promise for handling geotechnical and underground engineering problems. These pose unique challenges stemming from the unpredictable nature of ground conditions, the intricacies of subsurface environments, and the critical nature of infrastructural reliability and safety associated with geotechnical and underground engineering activities.
The complex on-site conditions and limited and imprecise data collection render the validation of existing physical models and their application in the context of engineering decision making challenging. In many situations, however, it is even hard to identify the appropriate physical models for corresponding engineering applications.
This special issue aims to provide a forum for the investigation and adaptation of emerging AI techniques to advance geotechnical data analysis and decision support, which is expected to improve reliability, resilience, and sustainability for geotechnical and underground engineering.
