Abstract

This review thoroughly investigated the topic of rainfall thresholds for landslide occurrence, producing an abundance of case studies at different scales of analysis and several technical and scientific advances. The authors reviewed the most recent papers published in scientific journals, highlighting significant advances and critical issues, and collected information on 115 rainfall thresholds published over 9 years (2008-2016). This noteworthy review presented statistical-based thresholds from articles collated over 9 years between 2008 (the year of the Guzzetti et al. paper) and 2016. Main improvements that stood out from the review include the definition of standard procedures for the identification of rainfall events and for the objective definition of the thresholds.
