Joseph Osumeje is currently a Schmidt AI African Faculty Fellow and Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Michigan, specializing in AI-driven groundwater modelling. His research integrates geophysics, remote sensing, and physics-informed machine learning to improve groundwater characterization, forecasting, and decision support under climate variability. He is particularly interested in developing scalable, data-efficient modeling frameworks that leverage sparse observations and physical constraints to address groundwater sustainability and climate resilience, especially in data-limited and climate-vulnerable regions.

He is an Associate Professor of Physics/Geophysics at Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, where he has led interdisciplinary research and graduate training at the intersection of Earth science and artificial intelligence. His teaching and mentoring emphasize strong physical foundations, hands-on computational methods, and the responsible application of AI to real-world environmental challenges. Through his combined research and educational activities, he aims to bridge fundamental subsurface processes with modern data science to support sustainable water infrastructure and informed environmental decision-making.
